Default Blank space at top of page

I am using Word 2013 and looking at a document showing grids, the first line is lower than it should be. It won't let me "pull" it up to the top of the page. I don't see paragraph marks, just blank space. What can I do?

Please help. I am trying to put together a book of my Mom's writings and poems to give to the family. Mom recently passed away at age 95 and I found her writings when going through some of her things.

The distance from the edge of the paper area is ultimately determined by the printer driver, however I can't imagine why you would want to print that close to the top. Other things to consider are the height of the top margin and the leading built into the font itself, which determines how much space the font uses. The former you can reduce, the latter you are stuck with.

Thank you for the quick reply to my post. However, I know I didn't put the problem right because I do have a 1" margin set at the top. I am ready to scrap this document and start again. I think one of the problems with this one is the pictures that I had deleted and then put back in.

Anyway, if I start over, what kind of setup would you recommend for a paper size 10" x 8" that is perforated in the center so I want to print 2 pages per sheet that will be printed on the back and then separated to make a book. So, I need a wider margin on the even pages on the left side and a wider margin on the odd pages on the right side.

The size of paper that you can configure accurately in Word is determined by the printer driver, which is an essential part of the process. If the size is not listed, the driver will substitute another standard size.

You can create a new 'form' size from Windows Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Select the Printer and you should get an option - Print Server Properties (Windows 8 dialogs are slightly different from Windows 7 which I have here) - from which you can create the 8 x 10 form size and thus allow you to select it as a page size in Word, which should produce better results.

The left and right page options can be configured from Page Layout > Page Setup. Click the arrow in the bottom right corner of the ribbon group and you will see another dialog. On the Layout tab you can set different odd and even headers and footers and from the Margins tab you can set the Gutter which will give you the additional margin space left or right.

Default Customer Printing for a book

Thanks for your reply. However, you can tell I am a senior citizen, almost 70, because I put the wrong size for my paper. It is 13" x 8". However, I didn't know about setting up my printer in the control panel but my printer doesn't allow me to set a custom size so I will see what HP recommends for that. So, with this paper being perforated in the center should I try and do two pages in the set up or 2 columns? What do you recommend?

Thank you for setting up the page layout.
