Default microsoft word doc downloads will not open

I'm getting very frustrated with Word. Though it opens most .doc files just fine, it refuses to open .doc downloads from email attachments or websites. An error pops up that says: *check the file permissions for the doc or drive, make sure there's sufficient free memory and disk space, open the file with the text recovery converter. None of this seems to be relevant to the issue, because file permissions are open, memory and disk space are fine, and the text recovery converter did squat. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

You could try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change), but your description suggests the problem might just as easily be with Windows. Either that or you're trying to save the attachments to a location you don't have write permissions for with the account you're using. You might also try clearing out the Temp folder (See 'Orphaned Temporary Files - Applies to all versions' at: http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm)

One other thing you may want to do is get in the habit of saving documents directly to your hard drive in a known location and then opening them from within Word. This extra step may work around the problem you've been having. It will also probably keep you from losing your work accidentally at some time in the future.
