Default Is it possible to copy & paste Table of Contents out of one document into another?

Using Word 2013

I have a Word document with a Table of Contents inside of it -

I have a 2nd document formatted similarly, but not identical to the first -

In a perfect world, I'd like to be able to copy / paste the T.O.C. out of the one document - into the other - update the table & have the new T.O.C. show as desired.

After I copy & pate - then update the Table of Contents in the 2nd document - I only show two section headings - but I have several that will not show -

Any help I could receive in getting the the other headings to show up in my T.O.C. that would be great.

This is keeeling me!

That would indicate that those that do not show are not using the same "heading styles" as the others. You would have to affix the correct styles to the section headings that are not showing...then update the TOC.

For REAL information on TOCs refer to http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...fcontents.html.

Of course there may be other/better links on same topics out there...

Default Thanks!

Sorry for the delayed response -

All replies were extremely helpful - I went from not knowing anything about a Table of Contents, to having what I need mostly fleshed out.

One more question: In my actual document the pages are numbered by section (ex: 9-1, 10-1, 11-1, 11-2, etc) - but my TOC only reference the actual page number - at the end of the leading dots it shows (page) 1, (page) 2.

How do I edit my TOC to reference the section numbers instead of the page numbers???

You do not edit your TOC. To get the results that you want you have to create your page numbers in the document accordingly (Section 1 begins at 1-1, Section 2 at 2-1, etc.). Doing that, your page numbers have to be setup to include (1) the Section/Chapter number; (2) a "section break" at the end of each section; (3) the "Link to Previous" option is NOT linked between sections.

Before you do your complete document, I would suggest that you do the first two sections...then update the TOC to make sure what you are trying to achieve is actually there.

That is my thoughts. Other posters may offer a better solution.

Hope this helps...
