Default Word linked to Excel

I have a Word file with several links to an Excel file. All of the links within the Word file are set to "Manual Update" rather than "Automatic Update" update. Whenever I open the Word file BEFORE opening the Excel file or WITHOUT opening the Excel file, Word opens/closes the linked Excel file repeatedly as it cycles through all of the links within the Word document. This makes opening the Word file very slow and painful. How can I suppress this function or turn it off?

Thanks

I'm not sure if this will make a difference, but make sure Word's 'update automatic links at open' option is unchecked, too.

Yes, it was already unchecked.

AFAIK, if the links are set to manual update, they shouldn't be updating when the Word document is opened - all the more so if the 'update automatic links at open' option is unchecked. That may not apply to links in a page header or footer, though, in which case that may trigger the updating of other links, too.

So is there any other reason why the Word file would be prompting the opening of the Excel file? Could it have something to do with the different links to Excel? Some links are just a single cell within a sentence, while other links reflect whole tables from Excel. This does not appear to be a HUGE difference in Word, but the link TYPES are slightly different in Word.

Single cell: Excel.SheetMacroEnabled Worksheet
Chart: Macro-Enabled Worksheet

BTW, what's AFAIK?

The kind of content linked to shouldn't matter. The only thing that should matter is auto-updating and, perhaps, whether a link is in the page header/footer.

AFAIK = As Far As I Know (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/de.../english/AFAIK)
