Default Documents publish from a content management system with the wrong fonts after upgrading to Word 2013

My company uses a content management system called Author-it to publish user manuals and other documentation to Word. We use a template and have our styles defined so that headings use Cambria and body text uses Calibri. We have been publishing to Word 2007 for years with no problem.

We have begun testing with Word 2013 in preparation for a corporate upgrade to Office 2013 in the near future. When we publish from Author-it to Word 2013, all text comes out as Calibri -- even the headings, which are supposed to be Cambria. The style definitions for the headings still say to use Cambria, but the headings use Calibri, so it looks like perhaps something is overriding the style definition.

As an experiment, we also tried publishing to Word 2010, and we had no problem there -- the headings did publish as Cambria, per the style definition. We then saved the template as a Word 2010 template, upgraded to Word 2013, and got the wrong fonts when publishing to Word 2013.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be happening and how we could fix this?

Check whether the document has the 'Automatically update document styles' property checked, under Developer>Templates. If so, the simplest solution is to change the font settings in the Style definitions in the template. Although you could uncheck the 'Automatically update document styles' setting, that's not going to help for a document that's already been compromised. Indeed, even if the 'Automatically update document styles' setting isn't checked, doing so and changing the font settings in the Style definitions in the template may resolve the problem.

The font settings in the Style definitions in the template are fine -- they say to use Cambria for headings. The weird thing is that, when I publish new documents from my content management system -- based on the template -- they Style definitions in the published document say to use Calibri (and indeed, that's exactly what happens). Is there something in Word that overrides a template style setting?

But I tried unchecking 'Automatically update document styles' in the template anyway. It did not fix the problem when I published . I am not concerned about documents that have already been compromised because we're just in a testing phase, but we need to be able to publish new ones with the correct formatting before we can upgrade to Office 2013.

We have talked to the people at Author-it (our content management system), and they seem to be stumped, too. It's not a problem when we publish from Author-it to Word 2007 or Word 2010. The problem occurs only when we publish to Word 2013. So it seems to me that Word 2013 must be doing something different with templates or styles or fonts than
Word 2010 or 2007.

As I already said, having the 'Automatically update document styles' setting checked in the document will do that. Changing that setting after the fact, in either the document or its template, is of no consequence. You need to change the Style definitions in the template.
