Cant create any more numbered lists.
I have been working on a word document .docx (word 2013) and the document is 265 pages long and all of the content is individual numbered lists. As i create more and more numbered lists I ran into an issue many times now that i'm unable to create anymore numbered lists. When i click on restart at 1 the lists go blank with no numbering. and i have done a lot of stuff to try and work around it but I cant find anything that will fix it. Thanks in advance for anyone putting time in to help me. |

I do not know of a limit on the number of lists.
Try creating numbering using styles linked to numbering. How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly |

Thank you for your input. However this didnt work for me, the numbering still goes blank. :-( I followed every step in the tutorial and am using styles but for whatever reason when i take the list off and apply the style the list icon lights up again and is still using a list and goes blank after so many lists.

Word's numbering is and always has been problematic.
Numbering in Microsoft Word I am guessing that you have created numerous list templates in your document rather than simply using one and restarting. You may need to start over from scratch, removing all numbering and then applying the styles. You would do this in a copy of your document. |

Can you elaborate on "list templates" please? However i can tell you that I only used one numbering format for the whole document, OTHER than the headings due to the fact that the headings are multilevel lists and not single level lists. Just to be specific im having issues with the single level lists. And thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread!

Sorry. Everything I know is in John McGhie's article on numbering. Word Numbering Explained
I do not have a clear understanding of list templates because I do all numbering that will require any editing using the methods set forth in Shauna's article. List templates are at a lower level in the structure of Word documents than I work. In .doc type documents they are in the binary structure; in .docx type documents they are in the xml. If you really want to understand what is going on in your document, you can examine the xml. I do not recommend this path. Quote:

I just found confirmation of my hunches in a different forum. In Ribbon versions of Word each time you restart numbering for a single-level list, you create a new list template. If instead you use a multi-level list with only one (lower) level numbered and restart numbering by using the higher level, you only have on list template in use.
See Suzanne Barnhill's response on September 13, 2013, in this thread. |

For most documents the method you are using would work fine, but most documents do not have that many lists.

useful information!
Thank you! Sounds like I tried doing this but I couldnt get the style to tie to a multi level list. i'll try this again and also go over the information you sent me. i'll reply back with the results when I get the chance to try it out. Thank you again for all of your input!

The steps Shauna gives seem arcane at times. They are all necessary, though. You do not need to use the built-in headings. Pay especial attention to her instructions to use particular buttons and not others.
