Default Page numbers 1-1, 1-1A, 1-1B, 1-2

I have a document that currently has four sections and the page numbers are 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and so on. If I need to insert a page or two between 1-1 and 1-2, I would like to change the page numbers to reflect 1-1, 1-1A, 1-1B, 1-2…. Is this possible in Word? The document is hundreds of pages long and if we can set it up like this we only have to insert two pages instead of printing out the whole section.

Sorry, you can't do this, unless you want to add numbers manually (which will be difficult to maintain).

A lot of work for readers as well as writers … somewhere on the MVP site for Word, there's a reference to an Australian refinery disaster where expecting readers to take pages out of binders, add pages in the right place in binders and so on was identified as a significant contributory factor.

Perhaps you could prepare the new pages as a separate document and publish them as an addendum? then deftly incorporate them in the main document for the next big release.

I believe you are thinking of this article on the mvps.org site: http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/chapternumber.htm.

Shoot, it would make things a whole lot easier. We use change pages so you don't have to print the whole section out after what you add spills onto another page. I guess we'll have to do it manually then.
