Default Why does my Quick Styles Gallery behave like a template, when I don't actually have that template?

Hello,

I'm hoping for some clarification on how styles within documents work, and how templates affect documents they are attached to. I'll post three screenshots to illustrate why I am confused.

This first screenshot shows that there is a document I am working with. It was originally created with a template that is not on my machine:

There is no "Documents and Settings" folder on the root of my C:/ drive - I have Windows 7, not XP. I do not have any templates on my machine, other than the Normal.dot file, shown here:

Yet, if you look at the quick-style-access toolbar I've highlighted in Red in the above picture, you'll see I have 9 Heading styles available in the document. My normal.dot template file on my machine only has 2 Heading styles. In fact, here's what a document looks like when I create a new document from scratch:

So, what I'm wondering is: Why can I see Headings 1 - 9 in screenshots one & two, when I don't even have the template that the document was made with?

The Quick Styles Gallery is tricky.
The settings for headings 3-9 are that they are displayed when the heading level above them has been used, I believe. This is not based on a template, but on what styles are tagged as "in use" by Word.

Once you use a style in a document, the style becomes part of the document so it will travel with it. Those styles are now part of that document regardless of if you have the original template it was created with.

When you open a new blank document on your computer, which is created from the Normal.dot file, you automatically have a whole range of styles however the Styles gallery only shows 7 of the most common or recommended styles within that document.

I have included an attachment which will step you through the process to have all Styles displayed in the Style pane.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
