Slightly Different Header on Every Page
I've been hired to redo/clean up an EMT manual for the local hospital. Down the right side of each page they need a colored (to identify the chapter), and a section number and name. Exhibit A:
The way they had it set up is to manually insert that on every page, alternating from the left side to the right side (since it's printed double sided). The problem with doing that is when you have to add a page, it screws everything up because now all the strips are on the inside of the page. Exhibit B: To solve the problem of them every being on the wrong side, I thought I could use headers. I learned how to turn a header and put it on down the side of the page instead of the top, and I learned how to divide sections so that I can have different Colors for the different chapters. However I can't for the life of me figure out how to have the section names and numbers (like "Section 6.15.1 Spinal Trauma - Cont.") from Exhibit A. Making a new section every single page seems unmanageable, as this is 600 pages long. If only I could have a text box in every header that I could easily edit. But then I have the same problem of not being able to add pages without screwing everything up. Advice? |

Put these in Text boxes in your headers (even though not in the normal header area). Use different even and odd headers. The text boxes should be set to be behind or in front of text rather than in-line with text.

Following up, you do not need new sections every page.
Use the StyleRef Field to reflect page contents in your textbox. |

I looked into the StyleRef field thing. From what I can understand, that takes text from the page, that you manually tag with a bit of code and puts it into the header. The problem is that while I may want my header to say "Section 1.2.1 - Smoke Inhalation" it doesn't necessarily say that on the page anywhere for the StyleRef to draw from. Plus to be honest... That all seems a bit over my head. |

So, if you have a Heading 3 style heading that says "1.2.1 - Smoke Inhalation" you can use a StyleRef field to pick that up. It will continue as that until something else using Heading 3 appears in your document. To cancel it, you would need an empty paragraph formatted using Heading 3. You are asking for fairly complex behavior from Word. That means that you may have to learn how to get it to do that. It isn't hard, but it may take a bit of time and experimentation. |

You can use the StyleRef field to vary the text as appropriate. |
