Version number from document filename via field code

Hello!

I deal with document files all day that have a header with pertinent information (Date of last save, file path, last saved by, etc.). All file names are named with a similar convention: FILENAME-E-v1.docx, FILENAME-E-v2.docx, etc.

Is there any way for me to extract the v1, v2, etc. from the filename and update accordingly?

The best you can do with Word fields is to use a FILENAME field to display the filename (i.e. FILENAME-E-v1.docx) - you can't display just the version #.

So there's no way of doing an excel-style formula using the field codes? I can think of a whole bunch of ways of operating on a bit of text using excel, but sadly this doesn't seem to be the case with field codes.

As I already said, no. Word's field codes are much more limited than Excel's formulae.
