HTML Links do not work in MS Word 2003
I have a MS Word 2003 document with many html links to various internet sites. Some of the links do work, others do not. For the links that do not work, I can edit the link, copy the destination, paste that into Internet Explorer, and it works just fine. The destination websites do not appear to be the problem. When clicking on the link, the error dialog says "Unable to open http:// .... The Internet site reports that the item you requested could not be found. (HTTP/1.0 404). What might be the problem ? Most likely its either:
1. spurious characters (e.g. spaces) in the embedded link; or 2. problems related your browser - possibly the connection, caching, etc.

Hello
How could it be spurious characters ? I edit link, copy, paste into browser, it works. How could it be related to browser ? Maybe I did not list all symptoms ... happens with same document on different PCs at home and work. No internet connect related problem that I can see. |

Unless the document is itself corrupt, the symptoms you're describing suggests that whatever you have as the link in Word is itself faulty in a way that means Word cannot parse it correctly.

And yet I can edit the link, copy the url exactly, and paste it into any browser and it works fine ?
Does your explanation really make sense ? |

Do you really suppose I'd have said so otherwise? Do remember I can't look over your shoulder to see what is in your document or what else there might be about your document or system that might affect things.
Have you tried the same link in other documents, by copying it: • afresh from the website; or • from your existing document, and pasting it into a new document? Have you tried other links from the same document? If so, in what cases does it work/not work?

Ok, simple example ....
This link does not work from a word document, but does everywhere else.

I get a 'content not available' error message with that link regardless of whether I use it from a document or paste it into a browser. Evidently you're trying to access a page that requires permissions (e.g. via a login process) that neither I nor your Word document can supply.

I click on that link right from this page and go directly to the web page.
Your saying that does not happen - sorry, I misunderstand your reply. |

What don't you understand? Your link doesn't work at all for me.

I guess then it is a setup issue in your browser. I can directly click on the link above and it opens immiediately.
In 3 different browsers. |

No, it is nothing to do with my browser. The fact is that you're trying to access a restricted web page, for which one has to be logged into Facebook. Your hyperlink has none of the protocols for that.

For cross-posting etiquette, please read: http://www.excelguru.ca/content.php?184 You have already been told what the issue is. Asking the same question elsewhere doesn't change the issue.

I guess I also failed to explain that the same thing happens whether I am logged in to facebook or not.

Your PC is probably configured to log you in automatically. Try it from a completely different PC or user account.
