I've been designing a handbook for an insurance agency in another city. I designed it all in Word on my Mac. It looks just fine, no complicated fonts, everything is in Arial. I sent the file to the people who need it and they say the only see a bunch of boxes instead of letters. I've tested it and sent files to friends with Macs and PCs and have figured out that it's a Mac to PC issue. I've tried saving it as a .doc, .docx and .rtf file and still nothing's working. I would just give them a PDF but they say they want a Word doc so they can edit it down the line. How can I get this to work? I really don't want to have to retype the entire thin, it's about 150 pages. Help please

If they're seeing boxes, that sounds like a fonts question. Could you post something non-sensitive here for the gurus to look at?

Management question: if you're designing the handbook and other people then want to edit, how are you managing document ownership and versioning? what's the process for getting edits back to you, or is someone else taking over? Send them a .pdf, collect their comments, send them an update … one reliable approved source for the document.

Stupid question, but what do you mean by non-sensitive?
On the file form, I tried getting them to accept a PDF with form fields, but they want to be able to edit content in the future if they need to...they're not the most computer-savvy people around. Basically all they needed me for was compiling ALL their content into one typed up and formatted file...which they now want me to retype.

Not stupid at all – we should always ask when we aren't sure. In this context, it means 'information your company would not want strangers to see'.
Now that sounds like a really satisfying task :-}
