Default Making Word Icon on Desktop Default Settings

I have a MS Word shortcut icon on my desktop so that I can quickly type a word document. However when I open a new word document with it, I cannot retain the same formatting as I had in my last document when I open the shortcut again. What I do in the new document message, is format what I want such as the font and size, margins, orientation, ruler, etc. Then I click Set as Default under Design and close and save that to the Desktop. That document of course is the format that I want if I open it again. However when I click again on my MS Word shortcut icon for a new word document, the new formatting is not there, How do I get my new formatting to always come up in my MS Word shortcut icon?

Method 1)
Open the normal template and change the formatting the way you want (no text though). Save it.
Normal Template in Microsoft Word - How to Find or Open the Normal Template

Method 2)
Create and save a template with the defaults you want. In Windows, find the template on your computer and make a shortcut to it. Put that shortcut on your desktop.
Templates in Microsoft Word

Something is apparently blocking your changes (through the Set as Default command) from being saved. This is usually a poorly written Add-In.
Add-Ins in Microsoft Word Finding and disabling that Add-In will let you make changes through that command.

Much thanks Charles.
Your Method 2 seemed the simpliest way to resolve this - it works. Wish MS Office would include a definitive pdf to more thoroughly cover such things.

Charles,
I placed the original word 2013 template (from which I made the desktop shortcut) and the old Word 2013 shortcut (which would not hold the formatting) under Program Files (x86) - Microsoft Office. Is there any problem with this placement?

I don't see any problem with it. You should only have one normal template but you can name a template anything you want.
