I see you've posted on a related issue at: http://www.excelforum.com/word-forma...ing-links.html. I note from your post there that you're:

It also seems much slower in loading the Word document after the links are updated even with auto-update turned off

As you go on to note there:

The same Virtual Machine issue may be at play here.
