Default Marking Index items

I'm trying to add an index to a long document.
But when I try to mark entries in the text, formatting marks are added to the complete document, and when I turn them off, the indexed item is no longer marked.
Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
Tx.

Index entries are added as XE fields, and these are formatted as hidden text, which is why Word enables the display of nonprinting marks (including but not limited to hidden text). Hiding the marks only hides the XE fields; it doesn't remove them. You can still insert an index or update an existing index.
