Create updating reference in table
Hello,
I am writing a table in Word with a number of references such as 3.1.1, 3.1.2 etc which I want to auto-populate and increment as I tab the next row, but don't want them to be of Heading x style, since they would then show up in the TOC. I have shown a section of my table below for illustration. Does anyone have any idea how to achieve this? Requirement Reference Detail 3.1.1 |

The use of a Heading Style doesn't automatically mean the content will show up in the Table of Contents. TOC fields have formatting switches that allow you to specify which headings are included. By default, Headings 1-3 are, but 4-9 aren't. If you create one via Insert|Quick Parts|Field>TOC, you have complete control over what levels get included.
