Subdocuments without Page Breaks?
I have a master document with multiple subdocuments. Word is automatically inserting a "continuous page break" after each subdocument. Is there a way to remove these page breaks? |

The master document function in Word is defective and likely to destroy your documents. It is better avoided altogether. Combine the documents into one larger document. The Insert Documents add-in on my web site will help with that, or you can use Insert Object > Text from File

I read about this just yesterday, and also many years ago. Does Microsoft not have time and resources to fix the problems and improve Master Document.

I am sure they do, but apparently they don't consider it enough of a priority - especially as Word can handle documents of thousands of pages in a single file.

With the processing power, RAM and storage space of today's computers, the reason for Master Documents (and demand from corporate users) is minimal. They tacked the feature on in the 1990's to compete with Word Perfect (which did such things well) without really finishing it. It remains unfinished, and, as Graham said, defective.

Re-using text across documents is still a good reason for wanting to break documents into sub-files, as is extracting updated chunks for translation. Luckily, there are other programs out there that support these requirements :-}

Word provides a number of ways of utilising documents and parts of documents for re-use e.g. Building Blocks, AutoCorrect, IncludeText fields and Insert Text, without having to use the flaky master document function.
You will find an Insert Documents add-in on my web site that makes handling documents for such use far simpler.

Indeed - but for some reason, I haven't taken the time to discover, the forum gets upset when I post links.
