In a Word doc, I want to create a spot (text, likely) that when clicked upon, shows specific content. The content would unshow when it's clicked off of. This would be like a popup that shows only when the user clicks or hovers.

Ideas?

To provide ‘hover’ help text in a document, you can use a hyperlink field pointing to the text concerned. You do this by bookmarking the text, then inserting a hyperlink to it, with the hyperlink ‘Screen tip’ text as the ‘hover’ help text.

Note, the bookmark can be to the text with the pop-up itself. That is, it does not have to take you anywhere else in the document. The hyperlink formatting in this text was removed by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar.

To clarify -- I don't want to have the text available in the document except when someone clicks in the hot spot, so bookmarking existing text probably won't help.

What I'm trying to create is a set of very simple instructions that when a user clicks on a "More Detail" hotspot, more detail appears. This would be similar to in a helpfile, a user can get more or less detail.

Any other ideas?

That's exactly what the hyperlink provides...

Although Charles' example has doesn't show the hyperlink formatting, you may prefer to keep it that way so the user knows where they can find the pop-up text.

Thanks, Charles and Paul. This makes total sense and works fine. Now to complicate, any way to 1) add a image to a popup and 2) Not display the instruction "Click to follow link." The image will clarify the text and "click to follow link" instruction will confuse people.

Sorry, but you can't either add a picture or get rid of the "Click to follow link" message.

An alternative, if you're happy to have an image and/or instructions appear in the body of the document but not print, is to use a field coded like:
{IF{PRINTDATE \@ yyyyMMddHHmm}<> {DATE \@ yyyyMMddHHmm} "instructions/picture here"}
Changing the <> to = prints content that doesn't normally display. Pressing F9 after printing restores the display. However, since the PRINTDATE field doesn't support seconds, you might have to wait up to a minute before you can do that. Variations on the theme can be made to permanently show or hide content when the document is printed.

Note: The field brace pairs (i.e. '{ }') for the above example are all created in the document itself, via Ctrl-F9 (Cmd-F9 on a Mac); you can't simply type them or copy & paste them from this message. Nor is it practicable to add them via any of the standard Word dialogues.

The alternative would be a MacroButton Field that runs a macro pops up a userform. This will work but only if macros are enabled. Create & Employ a Userform
