Default autocorrect double space to single space

I am constantly hitting the spacebar twice on my new laptop. I don't care for the keyboard on the Dell Stuido XPS. Great laptop other than the keyboard.

When I type, somehow I always manage to hit the spacebar twice, almost after every word.

After I type an entire document I can go back and fix it with FIND & REPLACE but is there a way to auto correct this? When I go into auto correct, a spacebar doesn't seem to be an option.

Any suggestions?

Default Autocorrect

You can easily create an Autocorrect entry for this. It works just like the spelling corrections that Word makes when yo enable this feature in spelling functions.

Press the Office button and then select Word Options at the bottom (or press Alt+F,I). Select Proofing at left. At the top of the next dialogue, select Autocorrect Options, then the AutoCorrect tab. In the Replace column, type your two spaces; in the With column, a single space. Press OK. You're done. For now on, your doubles will instantly turn to singles.

Does this resolve your problem?

I'm using Office 2000. When I have Word open, at the top menu I click on tools, then autocorrect which I assume is the same place you are describing. (a few different ways to get there).

If I type in two space in the "replace" field and then a single space in the "with" field, the OK button does not light up. It stays dim. It will only accept some type of character, not a space from the spacebar.

Is there a special character I can enter for a "spacebar"?

Maybe Office xp or Office 2007 will accept a spacebar, I'll have to try that on my buddies computer which has Office 2007.

Just tried it on my buddies laptop running office 2007 and it's a no go. The autocorrect REPLACE and WITH fields have to have some type of character. It will not accept only a space or two spaces.

This was the very first thing I tried when I started having this problem with the new laptop. So still looking for any suggestions.

Autocorrect won't do what you want... you can put spaces in the With box, but not in the Replace box of Autocorrect. This is because one of the events that causes Autocorrect to fire is when a space is typed.

Maybe it would help you to tell Spelling and Grammer checker that 2 spaces should be flagged as wrong. To do so,
Tools > Options > Spelling and Grammer tab
Settings button
Spaces required between sentences dropdown, choose 1

I'm not sure why Microsoft doesn't just make this a standard option.

As Kimberly stated: AutoCorrect uses the space character as a trigger.

It will not allow a simple double-space to be part of the replaced text.

You can easily use a macro for this.

The grammar checker also can be set to show a problem with a double space following a period, question mark, or colon.

The original problem was for double-spaces inside of sentences. A macro would address that, the grammar checker might as well. Your suggested list including every letter will catch some at the end of sentences.

So too would a fairly simple Find/Replace.
