Default Header/Footer Disappears when attempting to edit.

I've looked through the forums and found a few cases that may be identical to mine, but none of them actually solved the problem for the original poster (even though many thought they did).

Here's the problem. In print layout, my header and footer are visible, formatted correctly, looks great. I need to change the text in both. When I double click on the header/footer, the contents disappear (and the spacing also decreases like it would if there were no content in the header/footer). As soon as I activate the body of the document again, the header/footer reappear.

If I print the document, the header and footer print as well. Great! They actually do exist in the document...I still cannot edit them.

First, I do not have the "white space" hidden as many users have given this as a solution. I can see my header/footer.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Could you attached an example of the problem file so it could be looked at (removing any textual data that is not necessary). It would be easier to troubleshoot the problem.

I'd like to, but the header still contains information that I am contractually obligated not to share. I did however find a solution. If I copy and paste a header from secondary document into the original header, it allows me to edit it after that. It is still a strange problem.

Some background, the document was sent off for translation and the translators may have used a different version of Word to complete the task. I'm assuming it is some kind of corruption issue. Just a thought. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to respond, but I have found a workaround.

Default I know I'm late to the game...but...SOLUTION!

While in the header (or the section the header belongs to), go to:
Page Setup>
Layout tab>
UNCHECK Different First Page>
OK
Attached Files
File Type: docx Magic Header.docx (308.2 KB, 2 views)

Glad you could chime in. Thank you for contributing. Please continue to do so. That is how these communities work and we all learn.

However, I do not believe that your response would solve the original problem. I've been unable to produce a situation where it would work. A first-page header not only would be visible when looking at the document but could also be edited directly. (I did check your sample. It was a couple of screenshots. You put some work into it. More useful would be a sample where the process you describe works.)

I've been looking at these issues for a while. That does not mean that I know everything; I do not. Nor am I always right.

Here are a couple of my writings analyzing headers and footers:

From where did the content of the "problematic" header originate? If it was created by a field, the field (or the location it references) could be damaged.

To work around corruption, you can usually copy all the content minus the final paragraph mark () of the document into a new, blank file. Note that if the document contains section breaks, you will have to copy each section separately (and omit the section breaks).
