Unhappy Endnotes Generating Random Sections for Each Page

I am using Office 2013 on Windows 7.

I am writing a book in Word. There are many sections -- front matter, each chapter, followed by Endnotes, Index, authors, back cover.

As I suppress the endnotes in each chapter section, they do appear in the Endnotes section I created where the Endnotes are not suppressed. The trouble is, after the first page of endnotes, the next page of notes begins a new section, the third page yet another section, and so forth. These sections following the first page section I have no control over and cannot get at any control characters to remove or alter them. The second page section is randomly attached to a preceding section several sections back. The third page to a following sections several sections back.

I am at wits end. I even found a pre-prepared Word document, supposedly by a Word guru, for a book with the endnotes following the chapters but before the index. The same thing happened in that document when I added text to the endnotes to get them to go over one page.

I have also totally suppressed all notes in all sections, set up a new Endnotes section, then re-suppressed the preceding section endnotes and got the same result.

Please help! Attached is the test Word document for a manuscript I retrieved either on this forum or another one.

What I see in your attachment is two pages of endnotes following the 'Notes' heading. Granted, the endnotes for each Section in the body of the document also has that Section # in the endnote pages, but they do display in the correct location.

Paul, I agree. I do not have a problem getting all the notes to display in sequence page after page in the Notes section.

But because successive Endnotes pages adopt headings and footers from other sections at random, and I cannot override them, I cannot label the Endnotes section headings consistently, with a heading like "Notes." You may notice that the heading on page 10, in the Endnotes section, is inexplicably tied to the heading on page 6.

It appears to me the underlying problem is that your 'notes' Section hasn't had its page layout correctly configured. It uses both the 'Different First Page' and the 'Different Odd & Even' settings, but you haven't unlinked all three headers for the Section from the previous Section. You'll need to do likewise for the following Section, too.

To do the unlinking, insert a couple of manual page breaks into the Notes and Glossary Sections, then make sure all three headers in each of those Sections are unlinked from those that precede them.

PS: I can't see the point of the Section break that follows immediately after the Notes Section.

Paul,
I understand what you are saying in concept. I have tried several times to do it, but can't get the job done. Were you able to do it with the test document I sent in? I have tried this on both the test document and my book manuscript to no avail.

In regard to your PS: I don't think the Section immediately following the notes section is there for any particular reason. It's just a test document.

Kim

It's quite simple, really. As I said, it's just a matter of unlinking the respective headings for your Notes Section and Glossary Section from the Sections that precede them. When using the 'Different First Page' and the 'Different Odd & Even' settings, that means inserting some temporary page breaks (or waiting till they overflow to two or three pages).

See attached.

Paul,
Wow! You did it. Thank you for showing me it can be done.
I have tried to replicate what you did, even with your revised document right beside me, and I still can't get it!

Too tired to continue tonight.
Thanks again. Back tomorrow.

Kim
