Default Heading 1 and Table & Figures style mismatch

Dear All

I am writing my thesis and need some help.

My Heading 1 has to be in Roman Numerals: Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter III etc.

Then my Heading 2, I can manage to make it into Arabic Numerals:
Chapter I
1.1 Testing
1.2 Trying
etc.

However when I go to Table and Figures, they appear like this:
Table I.1 instead of Table 1.1
Figure II.4 instead of Figure 2.4

How can I make it that way?
I tried changing the field codes but failed (beyond my ability)

Thanks!

I may get to your question at some point but expect someone else will answer before I sort it out.

In the meantime, it is vital for a thesis that you set up your numbering using the methods shown in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly. You want to do this early rather than late. Numbering created by simply clicking on the buttons will be a disaster.

Second point, do not use the Master Documents "Feature". More than one thesis has been completely trashed by that "feature."

I am afraid you don't quite get my question. I am alright with the headings and what not. However, when it comes to captions of figures I put in the thesis, it is a different matter. They appear like this:
Table I.1 (I want it to be Table 1.1)
Figure II.4 (I want it to be Figure 2.4)

The Roman Numerals appear because I use roman numerals for my Heading 1. What do you think? Thanks

As far as the reader is concerned, what you're seeing is what matches your document: Figure II.4 is figure n° 4 within Chapter II. Visually, it's not a style of numbering I'd recommend; and what happens when you're in a discussion and someone wants to say "take a look at table XIX.3"?

It would help, too, if you explained what numbering you want within each chapter. Are there numbered subheadings? Do tables and figures use the same sequence – Table 1, Table 2, Figure 3 – or (more readable) separate sequences– Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Table 3, Figure 2.

The Romans have had their day <g> But the comments from Charles are still bang up to date.

I got your question just fine. I just don't have time right now to set up a document in that format to play around with. I don't know the answer off-hand. However, I am not the only volunteer answering questions here and someone else may have an answer for you before I can come up with one. My other suggestions were simply addressed to your writing a thesis with numbered headings. If you have not read Shauna Kelly's article chances are strong that your numbering structure is messed up even if you haven't seen evidence of that yet.

I'm fine with Roman numerals. I'm a lawyer and we still use Latin from time to time. My favorite is "Res ipsa loquitur." It means "the thing speaks for itself," which it obviously does not, being in Latin.

I'm OK with Roman numerals if they show up occasionally in a document, but I wouldn't want to present a numbering scheme that mixed Roman and Arabic.
