Default Bookmarks problem

Hi,

I have a problem with my word document.

My document is around 100 pages.
It contains a first section and is followed by many appendices.
The first section as well as all the appendices are different chapters.

I have been able to build my table of contents and all my page numbering.
All this works fine. I found on the internet to use Headings 1 to 5 for the text and Headings 6 to 9 for the appendices (they said it was the good way to do this)

So the text is:
Chapter 1 (Heading 1)
Chapter 2 (Heading 1)
Chapter 3 (heading 1)

...
Appendix A (Heading 6)
Appendix B (Heading 6)
...
Appendix O (Heading 6)

However, when i click on View -> Navigation pane;
The bookmarks for my appendices (Heading 6) are collapsing under my Headings 1,2,3,4 and 5.

I would want my appendices to be on the same level as my Heading 1 in the bookmarks. But i can't use Heading 1 for my appendices. Because my text chapters are numbers (1,2,3...) and my appendices chapters are letters (A,B,C...).

The reason why i want the bookmarks to function is because i need those bookmarks when i convert my word document into a PDF file.

I have been able to google everything to get to this point, but for this last part, i couldn't find any already existing post or thread for that.

I hope that i have been clear enough

Help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much.

It has been awhile since I last worked with a docment as you described. But, when I did, I used http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...ppendixes.html as my guide.

Your problem appears to be that when you defined Heading 6 for your Table of Contents, you may have omitted to deselect Heading 1 from the TOC Options dialog box (I am guessing that you have BOTH Heading 1 and Heading 6 selected).

You can check that out and adjust (if necessary) by going to the References Ribbon, click to expand the Table of Contents menu, and select Insert Table of Contents.

Under the Table of Contents tab select Options to gain access to the TOC Options menu. Scroll down the TOC Levels and delete all Priority 1 levels except the Appendix Heading (if that is what you named it) with a priority of 1.

Then go back and update your TOC to verify.

Hope this helps...If not (that was my guess), hopefully, another user can assist you.

I used the same guide.
My table of content is OK.

It is the bookmarks of the navigation pane that are my problem.
The priorities set into the TOC do not apply to the bookmarks...

I would like to know how to customize those level priorities but in the bookmarks.

Thank you for your try!

Sorry about that. I got stuck up on your paragraph:

"I would want my appendices to be on the same level as my Heading 1 in the bookmarks. But i can't use Heading 1 for my appendices. Because my text chapters are numbers (1,2,3...) and my appendices chapters are letters (A,B,C...)."

Then I could not see the trees for the forrest...but, I digress.

Anyone has any idea?

How to make my headings priority in the bookmarks the same as the headings priority into the table of contents?

After reviewing this topic a little more, it appears that your appendicies (and/or appendix headings) must be a part of the TOC in order to also appear in the Navigation Pane. Further 'googling' led me to http://guides.lib.umich.edu/content....94&sid=2028054 which talks about the subject and should be of help to you.

Hope this helps...

Huge thanks for your help. But that won't make it.
Maybe i could work something around if you could answer this question for me :

Can you "unlink" Heading 6 from the Headings 1 to 9 hierarchy?
Is there a way that i can customize this heading so it loses everything that links him with its brothers?

I will tell you why.

1) I need an independent headings so i decide on his priority level on the bookmarks tab. (I can do this with a heading different from heading 1 to 9)
2) I need to use a heading between 1 and 9 for my appendix heading because i need to use it as chapter so my appendices has the chapter number into the page number. (I can do this already, but dropdown menu only lets me pick from heading 1 to 6)

Problem is... there is a contradiction said in those 2 things above. Both can't be possible at the same time.

So i would need to figure a way out to take one the heading (lets say heading 6) away from that pre-built hierarchy and unlink it.

So i can use the heading from the dropdown menu for my chapter number and choose its priority level on the navigation pane in the bookmarks tab.

Conceptually, my guess is that your Appendix heading is level one just like your Chapter heading: an appendix is not six levels deep in the hierarchy. If I needed to deliver that sort of numbering, I'd probably:
  1. set my own Chapter and Appendix styles and make sure both of them were set to level 1
  2. build the ToC from selected styles

My problem is not the TOC.
My problem is the level priorities in the bookmarks.

Well, re-read the section titled APPENDIX in the reference provided in post #6 above and follow those directions.

I used one of my files as a test that employs both sections/chapters and appendices and followed those instructions. In doing so, I ended up with the Navigation Pane following the format of the TOC (less pagination data). When I created that file, as I previously mentioned, I followed the instructions of http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...ppendixes.html using Headings 1 - 5 for my basic document and Headings 7-9 for the appendicies. Both Heading 1 and Heading 7 were set at TOC Level 1.

If none of this is helpful, then I will take a side seat and hopefully, another user who may understand more fully will help you.
