Word Mixing Numbered Headings with Numbered List
I have created a multilevel list of headings. I need each Heading to have either a sub-numbered heading or a sub-numbered list item with the hierarchical numbering maintained no matter which is used. 1. Heading 1 1.1 Heading 2 1.1.1 Heading 3 2. Heading 1 2.1 Item (text) 2.2 Heading 2 2.2.1 Item (text) |

First stop for any questions about numbering is always Shauna Kelly's pages – try http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...numbering.html
Just out of interest, why the mix – an Administration document with numbered headings and numbered paragraphs? I think I used fields for that last time I had to do it in Word, before gratefully returning to my usual environment. Styles might cut it, speculatively, if you had two numbered styles per level: but I'm ready to be told I'm wrong here … |

Numbering in Word
Thank you for posting the page from Shauna. I've read it and that's how I learned to create the multilevel list for headings. If my answer lies in there, I can't understand it. This is a software requirements document where categories of requirements are at different levels and each requirement needs a unique number based on section to be managed in the future.

In case it helps, here's a one-pager I've made. As you'll see, it uses custom styles so that both headings and paragraphs can be numbered driven by a field. If that works, all you have to do is make sure they don't start on the "future" sections before the requirements doc – and, thus, the numbering – is locked down!

I don't know who wrote the last post but the file is in Latin. Would you please upload the file you mentioned? It sounded exactly like what I need.

Set up heading numbering as discussed at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...g20072010.html. Then create body text paragraph styles, which you may call "Item 1," "Item 2," etc. (corresponding to your example). Make sure that "Item 1" is based on Heading 1, that "Item 2" is based on Heading 2, etc. For the "child" styles, change any settings that should be different from those of the parent heading styles. Numbering will be inherited.

Word Mixing Numbered Headings with Numbered List
Thanks! This is really interesting. I didn't open it in Word since I didn't have it on my Mac. I do have it at work. I bought Office for Mac this weekend since I'm just teaching myself more advanced Word use. I didn't know about hidden functionality.

To clarify, my advice is based on WinWord; I'm not sure if it works exactly the same in MacWord.
