Default Filename in footer

I'm new to this forum and glad to have found a source of good information about Microsoft Office products. My issue is that I can't get Word to put the file path in the footer of my documents. My understanding from MS Word help is that I need to create a footer with this text: Document: {FILENAME \p}. This doesn't work for me. Any help appreciated.

Default File name

What you need to insert is a field which has that text. A field is a command which Word can execute. You may be familiar with automatically-updating date fields, for instance.

For your purposes, the easiest way to do this is to place your cursor where you want the name to be in your footer and press Ctrl+F9 (the F9 key above the regular keys). This will insert a field in the form of a pair of curly brackets with two spaces between them,and your cursor will be between the spaces. Simply type the FILENAME \p (or, if you have already copied it to your clipboard, paste it in). Do not remove the spaces between your text and the brackets and do not add any. Then, move your cursor outside of the brackets and press Alt+F9. The result of the field, your file name path, will appear. Pressing Alt+F9 wil toggle between the two.

Does this resolve your problem?

Thank you, but no, my version of Word 2003 doesn't seem to take to that method. It's figured out though. I have to go to "View", "Header and Footer", "Insert Auto Text", "File Name and Path". The method you suggest does not work.

Default File name adn autotext

I'm glad that works for you.

In fact, it is doing the same thing, but inserting a field through specified shortcuts in menus. When I follow in Word 2007 the autotext route you specified, the field I get is

{ FILENAME \* MERGEFORMAT }

(You would see three spaces after FILENAME.)

This returns only the file name, not the path, which is what the \p in your post is for.

Cheers.
