how do i adjust column to chosen width

MS Word a couple of decades ago was better than MS word 2003. How could they make it so bad? If I set a column width, then other columns adjust their width either a little or a lot, so I cannot get my table adjusted to the right width. I think it's a bug. And the MS word help is no help.
