Default DOCX Documents

I cannot open DOCX attachments to emails or when they have been saved. When saving documents the only option is DOCX file or all files. How do I correct this?

How are you saving them?

Docx is the native format for a Word document in Word 2010.

Are you saying that you are running a computer with Word 2010 and cannot open .docx files on that computer?

I'm current on my updates and not having any problems. I'm confident this does not have to do with an update to Word.

I suspect malware or a bad Add-In. This is not something inherent in Word.

What happens if you start Word in safe mode and try to open the document?

How are you trying to open the document?
  • Starting Word and using File>Open?
  • Double-clicking on the icon?

If double-clicking, what happens if you start Word and then use File>Open?

That wasn't a solution, it was a diognostic. However, that is how I usually open Word documents.

You probably need to re-register Word.
You can do this by typing or copying the following line in the Run box under the Start menu:

winword.exe /r

Note the space before the /.
That only will work if you only have one version of Word on your computer.
