Default Annoying Word menu bar problem

I have found that when I open up a MS document, the horizontal menu bar sits on top of the top of the document, so that it hides the "close" and "minimize" buttons (as well as the third "+" button) at the top left of the document.

Is there a way to keep this from happening? I want to be able to see the entire document when I open it and not have the top hidden by the menu bar. Thanks.
