Default want to make letterhead template with second page blank

I have tried the Forum suggestion to create new template and click on "Different First Page" in Options in the design thread. However, after entering my desired header and then clicking on Different First Page, I am left with a blank page. When I save that, and open the file again, it is only the blank page, and my header seems to be lost. All I am trying to do is create a letterhead template that will contain my header and footer info, and when I go onto the second page, have it a blank page with only the page number.
I need a step by step method as I seem to be doing something wrong and am unable to create the template I want.
Thanks for any help you send along.
Bill
