Question How do I change Excel Chart Object link references from UNC to drive letter?

Hello!

I'm having a problem with Word referring to the UNC (universal naming convention) in the link to a Microsoft Excel Chart Object, and I need to find a way for it to not use the UNC, but rather, the drive letter.

Does anyone out there know how to do this?

Thanks!

Susie

If you add the 'Edit Links' icon to Word's QAT, you can use that to change the link path, via its 'change source' button.

Unhappy Edit Links / Change Source doesn't solve it

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion. I gave that a try, and saw that I get the same menu as when I right-click the chart and select Edit Links. I typed in the source name the way I wanted it to be (using the drive letter), but then Word changed it right back to the UNC.

Maybe someone else has experienced the same thing and found a solution to this?

Thanks!

Susie

Lightbulb Making progress!

I'm cautiously optimistic: After doing more research and playing around, trying fixes to similar issues others have posted on the web, I've been able to make some progress on resolving the problem.

In the Word document, type Alt-F9. Every link or merge field or anything similar that you've included in the document will appear. Go find your chart links, and edit the source there.

The change will stick as long as you have it open (including after saving the document), but will revert back upon closing and re-opening. I'm trying different things, like locking the links before closing, telling Word in the Web Options section not to update links upon saving, but nothing I've tried seems to work. I can (and did) create a macro to correct the links, but there's been problems opening the document in one office location if the links were created on the server of the other office location, so I'm worried that the "just press a button to run a macro after you've opened the document" strategy won't work.

Any thoughts on getting the change to stick upon closing and re-opening?

Using the Alt-F9 approach is simply a manual method for creating fields - I use it a lot. Of itself, though, that won't prevent Word updating the file path to match your system's UNC names. To do that, you'd have to use a path that points to a physical folder on a physical drive, such as your C drive. I suspect your UNC path points to a virtual drive & folder combination.

It is a virtual drive and folder. It's not possible, in this case, to use a physical drive. I'm stuck with the resources I've got. But surely there must be some creative solution to this? Perhaps there's some program floating around out there?

Sure, you could use a macro to change it back to a conventional path every time the document is opened, but Word will still only save the UNC path when you close the document. You can't prevent that. Besides which, I don't see that doing so achieves anything.

It achieves something when the alternative is to have the document "blow up" on you when you try opening it in a different office location (on a different server) from the one you last saved it!

I guess I'll have to get started on that macro!

Changing it to a physical path won't fix that, either. For that, you need to use a relative path, which LINK fields don't support. To see how to implement relative paths in Word, check out the macro solution I've posted at:

Oooh! That looks like an even better fix!! I just have to put the files into the same folder so it will work (and update all the various links and macros accordingly), then I'm going to give it a try!
