Default space in shading between lines

Hi, sometime ago I made a list in word, I believe it was v 2007 or 2010, and this list had a different background colour for each item, I believe i did it with paragraph shading, or early version's equivalent to that. thing is, it used to keep blank spaces between line colours, and now with word 2013, it shades the line, including the padding, until the next line. how to keep it separate?

thanks

not sure if I made myself clear, but something like this:

when I shade the background, I get this:

when I actually wanted space between the lines, like this:

(I only managed to get the space by breaking the listing items)

Okay this might be an inelegant solution. But from what I can tell, there really is no way to do exactly what you want. I played around with it for a while on mine (fair warning, I have 2013, so maybe in 2010 or 2007 there's a better solution). What I did was added a thick white below horizontal border to the text. So it ends up with the look you want, if not how you wanted it.

Basically, select the entire list. From the Home tab, in the Paragraph section, click the arrow next to the border icon and select the Borders and Shading link to open that window.

Set the color to white, and the width to 3pt (that's what you see here, but you could make the space larger or smaller). Then click the Below border icon on the diagram, and click OK.

That should take care of it. Hope this helps

Kate

If you want to be able to easily edit this list, it might even be worth putting the whole thing in a table with white borders. Just a thought - K

hey kate

actually that will do it. I thought there was a better way, but I've been searching everywhere, and if there's a way, it's not intuitive at all, so this is the best option I have, and works really well.

thanks a lot!
