Default File opening

I'm a newby (to the newest word) and my significant other is even more newby. I have a subscription to Office 365 and am still getting used to it both of us having graduated from Office 2003. Wow what a difference. Anyway we have a couple of questions:

I have occasion to open old .doc files. When I select one and double click it opens in preview mode where text slides from side to side. I have to select view to choose the way I'd rather see the document. I would like to configure word to open these files in edit mode directly. Is this possible? It's just an extra step I need to take I would rather not.

Is there a way to delete a file from the system within Word?

There are lots of ways to delete files from within Word. One simple way is to right-click on an icon and pick delete.

I suspect that you are referring to "Reading Mode."

If the top left corner of your window has only the three commands shown in the first attachment, you are in Reading Mode.

You can go to the bottom right of your window in the status bar and pick the print preview mode.

You can go to File > Options
Under the General tab uncheck the option that says “Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view.”

You may also want to change the Trust Center Settings for blocked files and make sure that legacy files are not blocked from opening or saving.

Let us know if this helps.

" One simple way is to right-click on an icon and pick delete." I'm not sure what Icon(s) you may be referring to?

The other solution, uncheck an option, works for what we want to do. Thanks.

I'm referring to the icons for the documents you want to delete.
