how does one do automatic Word paragraph spacing for word 2003

Perhaps you could explain what you mean. Do you mean text justification - as in text aligned against both the right & left margins? For that, simply click on the 'justify' button on the formatting toolbar, or press Ctrl-J.

When I highlight my document and go to format and click on auto on para spacing the space before and after the paragraphs is not equal for all paragraphs? So how can I make sure that the word will give me space before and after the paragraph which is the same for all paragraphs on my lengthy document?

The simple answer is don't use the auto settings - choose whatever before/after values you want. As a rule, I'd suggest 0 before and have just an 'after' value. That way, you won't get extra space at the top of a new page if that page also begins with a new paragraph.

Naturally, you need to select whatever you want to apply the format to.

PS: You can also achieve the same end, more robustly, by modifying the applicable paragraph styles.
