Default Updating active R/O templates (dot) and macros (dotm)

I have a set of templates and macros (R/O) that are in use, essentially 24X7, since the server on which they reside provides follow-the-sun access. I need to occasionally update them but since they are open by someone almost all the time, I am struggling with how to do that. I was hoping that they could be renamed so new versions could be copied into the 'Templates' folder but even that is locked by Word. Short of scheduling a world wide outage, is there any way around this problem? Current users should be able to continue to use the template and/or macros they have open until they quit Word but any new Word sessions should get the new versions. TIA.

The environment is Server 2008 R2 with Office 2010. Word is being accessed as a published Citrix application, thus the reason the templates are shared around the world.
