Default Help with numbering

This is driving me mad. I am trying to get the following

1.) Heading 1
2.1) Sub Heading
2.1.1) Sub Sub Heading

But I can't get it to work. The example shows my issue, but I have no idea how I have got it so wrong. Could someone please show me how and why I have gone wrong please.

That is what i have used, and various other pages. This might be a stupid question to some, but I have no idea how to get it to work correctly.

It seems to work fine to begin with, but as I add more headings the numbering goes all over the place.

The main headings work fine, its the headings underneath.

I want the following style, but can't get it to work.

1.
1.1
1.1.1

You have to set up the numbering following all of the steps in the article. That article, not anything you've found elsewhere.

You set up all 9 heading levels at one time, you do not add heading styles later.

To number something, you simply apply the heading style.

I know this is frustrating. It frustrates all of us. However, if you do follow the steps in that article, you will have outline numbering that works.

** An easier fix than the article: Select all of your Headings, Sub Headings, and Sun Headings (sic) then, to the right of the numbering icon on your ribbon, select the "multilevel list" icon. And select the 1 Heading 1, 1.1 Heading 2, 1.1.1 Heading 3 etc. option. Your numbers will sort themselves out.
