Urgent: Multi Level List issues with list levels becoming "corrupted?"
Hello,
I am having terribly frustrating problems with Microsoft Word 2007. I think the issue was actually caused by Open Office writer where I started off. I know there is some kind of numbering issue in Open Office but I forgot about it - I therefore tried to transfer over into Microsoft Word (cut and paste job) and I've been having some exceptionally difficult problems: Here is my intended list layout: (1) First Level 2. Second Level (a) Third Level - Simple you might have thought. However, I start off OK with this format (a) as third level but further down (a) becomes first level even though further up (1) is the first level. What the goodness - I am so frustrated because I desperately need to get a report finished! Regardless of whether you respond, thanks for taking the time to read this. Thanks and Kind Regards, Beanie UK. Last edited by beanie; 04-26-2014 at 03:11 PM. Reason: Typo made me look like a prune! |

Most likely, what appears to be one list is really two lists...
If you click the first level 1 list number, Word selects all level 1 items belonging to the the same list level. You can then customize the list via Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. However, recreating the numbering from scratch may be safer (although time-consuming). Set it up linked to paragraph styles as discussed in the article at http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...g20072010.html.

imho, numbering is an unnecessarily fragile component in every word-processor that follows the Word paradigm … not just Open/LibreOffice
There should be some sort of shrine to Shauna Kelly, where all of us who've been helped out by her descriptions of how to tame the beast could place offerings. |

The problem appears to be with the conversion. If you open a file in LibreOffice whose numbering was created in OpenOffice or in Word, there will always be some aspect of numbering that isn't working properly. :-(

In my experience (although I must admit that I haven't tested in a few months), numbering created in LibreOffice Writer may not work properly in OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft Word.
In other word, if you are creating a Word document, use Word...
