Default Word does not ask do i want to overwrite a file on saving a file

Hi I have Office 2010 and I have just noticed that if I open a word document then make some alteration to the document then save it with the same file name it does not warn me that this file exists and it does not ask me if I want to overwrite the file. It just saves it.

But I have noticed if I make a completely new file and then save it with a file name that exists it then warns asks do I want to overwrite the file, but not if I just amend an old file

Is this normal in word as I thought it always asks if you try and save a document with a file name that already exists
