Talking Using heading style level in a paragraph

Hi folks,

I have this issue trying to create a template. I have the following setup

1 Header 1
2 Header 2
3 Tests
3.1 Able's test
Test 1-1 yada,yada,yada
Test 1-2 yada,yada,yada
3.2 Becky's tests
Test 2-1 yada,yada,yada
Test 2-2 yada,yada,yada
3.3 Carl's tests
Test 3-1 yada,yada,yada
Test 3-2 yada,yada,yada

Now I am getting the second number (the one after the dash) by using {SEQ Install \n \* MERGEFORMAT} and having \r for each new heading 2 section - tedious, but it works. But I want to have the first number (the one before the dash) tie into the heading 2 level. So that the '2' from heading 3.2 correlates to the '2' in the Becky's test 2-1.

I've tried using {STYLEREF "Heading 2" \n } but it gives "Test 3.2-1" whereas I only want the 2 and leave the '3.' part behind.

Any ideas? TIA,
Kevin

Is there a reason for not using the same multi-level list numbering for the 'Test' paragraphs? After all, it is possible to have 'Test' prefix the numbering. That way, you can even forego the SEQ fields!!

See attached.

Thumbs up

I guess I needed to be more verbose - I'm sorry.

Where it says:
Test 2-1

It should say
Title: Test to check the do-dad
Test number: 2-1
Procedure: When doing test be careful that you do Able's 1-2 test first

So I am using the field within a paragraph or a table.

Sorry for the confusion - but I like this out-of-the-box idea

Kevin

Kevin,

Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data, showing what you're working with? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.

I don't propose to go round & round wasting time crafting solutions that aren't applicable because you've left details out. For example, you first post made no mention of tables and you second one gives no clear indication of where these occur in relation to anything else.

Sorry, But I didn't think the tables made any difference - they are just a way to organize the data and procedures. Instead or writing 3-2 somewhere in a paragraph it is organized in a cell in a row.

But I have parsed down the file that I am working on and have uploaded it here. The 'Table' are to organize testing that will be recorded on a spread-sheet. I'm using heading 3 for each table to make sure they are automatically numbered and listed in the ToC and are quickly approved by looking at the ToC.

Thanks,
Kevin

What you're working with is entirely different from what your first post suggested.

See attached. I've used StyleRef fields to replicate the test headings and Heading level 4 to auto generate the test #s.

Wow Paul,
Interesting way to do this - I would never had thought about doing it that way. I wonder what would happen if I needed to put that level 4 heading inside a paragraph.

Anyways don't really care as this solution works for me.

Thanks Paul,
Kevin

Well, as is, you'd get the numbering format associated with the Heading 4. With a little thought you could, of course, use a heading level other than 4 for either the numbering or the other paragraph...
