Default Page Numbers

I'm using Office to create a book. And, I want my "Introduction" to be page #1.

When I add a table of contents, the table of contents is page #1 - not introduction.

When I add page numbers, the table of contents is page #1 - not introduction.

How do I fix these two issues?

Thanks.

PS: Please don't post Word topics in the general 'Office' forum - we have a Word forum for that, to which I will now move this thread.

I'm sorry for posting in the wrong place.

I managed to get the ToC and page numbers to work, though I'm not quite sure how. LOL, I followed steps on youtube, but those were hard too.

I followed your link above, but I one of the buttons was grayed out and then I ended up completely breaking it. MS Word is one of the most absurdly complex programs I've used.

Anyway, as I said - ToC and Page #s work now.

How do I create a header section 3, without creating footer section 3?

IOW, I want the page numbers to continue where they're already being counted.
However, I want the header titles to start on a different page than the page numbers start on.

Thanks!

Okay, I figured out how to get the page numbers to continue off in the same place. I just manually set the page number to 'start at,' after adding a new break.

However, I still have at least one issue: In the image below, you see that my header mentions "Mercy and Grace." But the problem is, it should be mentioning the section that the page started in - not the section that it ended in. Like a dictionary!

In other words: The top of this page contains content from "Joy," and ends with content from "Mercy and Grace." I want the header to show "Joy," instead.

How do I fix this?

Also, if there's some way to alternate left and right alignment (page 1 aligns right, page 2 aligns left, etc.), that would be fantastic.

There's a couple of different ways of doing that, depending on your document structure. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (perhaps 5-10 pages [delete anything sensitive])? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.

I don't see anything that says "Go Advanced." Will this work?

I fixed the issue of it showing the wrong category, by putting each category on a new page.
I'd like to add the page number and make it alternate, left and right - in the header. Also in the header, and centered on the same line - I'd like to add Headline 2's name (like in the picture above.)

Thanks.

You would if you scrolled down a bit further...

See attached. Your document now has a 'different odd and even' page layout. I've also cleaned it up by redefining the Heading 3 & Heading 4 Styles, the latter now being applied to the book/chapter titles. You'll note how all those empty paragraphs you had have now gone, as have the manual page breaks. These features are all controlled via the Style definitions. From now on, if you use those Style definitions, you'll automatically get consistent spacing. Likewise the Header Style has been redefined with new tab-stops & 'after' spacing.

Thank you.
Also, the advanced button - I thought you meant in word, not on the forum. My mistake.
