Why don't grammar/spell checks work in Word 2007?
Hi All,
Maybe someone can solve a problem that a friend and I are both experiencing with Word 2007. We are used to having automatic spell check and grammar check in our Word programs. We both are now using Word 2007 and it wasn't giving us those green and red wavy lines for incorrect grammar or spelling. I went in and found out that, if I change the language preference from "All languages" to just "English," that those checks now work. But my friend has family back home in Spain and is used to having Word set up so that she can go from an English to a Spanish alphabet preference. So she has to have All Languages. It worked for her in her old Word but not now. Can anyone help? Please? I've been googling all over the place and cannot come up with the answer. Sherry |

As far as I know, the "All languages" option applies to the custom dictionary only. Spellcheck as you type should work anyway.
Your friend could try using "Detect language automatically"; note, however, that it isn't 100% reliable, so creating a custom paragraph (or character) style with Spanish would be safer. For more on spellcheck in general, see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/MasterSpellCheck.htm.

Thank you, Stefan, for your help. I've forwarded the info on to my friend. And yeah, spell/grammar check should work anyway by default but, for some reason, it didn't. And, as I understand it, a few other folks have had this problem. So, hopefully, we can get this solved.
Thanks again. I'll be back here with the results. Sherry |

Okay, here's an update on my friend's issues with spell/grammar check on Word 2007. It's been solved for her when she had someone come in and work on her computer. This is an excerpt from her email to me:
"It took the guy ten minutes to figure out what was wrong. It was simple, when one knows where to look. He showed me how the "proofing" feature was off (little box by the name left blank) in a pop-up list found in the Control Panel/Programs and Features/Uninstall or Change programs/Microsoft 2007. Yeah, right, like anyone would know that! He said sometimes they leave unchecked some little feature like that on purpose." Sherry |

OK, so the spellcheck feature had been uninstalled. I'm glad you got it sorted. Thanks for the follow-up!

Yes, it would appear so. I have no idea why.
