Do you see this when you open the document by double-clicking its icon? If you start Word first and then open the document via File | Open, then does it display in a readable format?
If using the Open dialog box works, then something has happened with the filename extension for the problem file. You should be able to resave in Word format and then just delete the original file.

Have you tried Open and Repair then? In the File | Open dialog box, select the file and, click the arrow on the Open button, and finally click Open and Repair.

Too bad. :-( To me, the "codes" displayed in the file look like RTF, so I was hoping it would be possible to recover the text.

Thinking about it, have you tried Recover Text from Any File then?

Mornin Stephan
I only appear to have a problem with this file. My office 2010 opens all other files. It is a very important file so I hope that there is a solution |

Have you tried Recover Text from Any File? In the Open dialog box, specify the "Recover Text from Any File" file type, and then try to open the problem file.

Just out of curiosity, is what we're seeing a chunk of .rtf?

That was my thought as well (see my previous replies), but apparently not; it made no difference for the damaged document.

If you are allowed to share the document, you can attach it to a message in this thread.

Good morning all I have tried everything (I think ????) to rescue this majorly important document. I have downloaded and tried Remo Repair Word and Recovery for Word but with no success.
Any other suggestions would put you on my Christmas card list ! |

Any chance you worked on this document in Word while it resided on a flash drive?
