Default Page numbers appearing both top and bottom

Using Office 2008.

Currently the document has page numbers at the top right. I go into Insert>page numbers and select bottom of page.

Now the document has page numbers both top and bottom right (on screen and in print preview).

(I'll be having other formatting questions as I try to conform to specific publication guidelines of my book.)

If you don't want one set or the other, you'll need to go into the header or footer and delete that one's PAGE field.

I viewed header and footer, highlighted and deleted the first one. After closing, only pages 1, 2, and 3 lost the header page number. After that, every page still has numbers top and bottom.

I thought simply changing under page numbering from top to bottom would *change* the page numbering from top to bottom, not add another page number, so I don't know why that did not work.

Page numbers are simply fields. To go on multiple pages with one insertion they need to go in headers or footers. Every Section has three different headers and three different footers. The headers and footers in one Section may or may not be linked to those in the previous Section. One or more of these in your second section is apparently not linked to the first one. You need to go through every header / footer to make your changes.
Header/Footer Settings Recap

Again, headers and footers are different parts. It is confusing, more so than it needs to be because if you insert a different page number in a header it replaces the current header (including any other text you may have in the header). I see this replacing as a bug or design flaw. It led you to think the same thing would happen when you inserted in a different part. This is a reasonable assumption, just mistaken.

It did not work because:

Insert means just that; it did an insert. It is not a toggle. It had no idea that there was already an inserted page number. It is as macropod and Charles have posted. You need to delete the ones you want to delete for all headers.
