Default Word 2010: can't load web page from valid link

1. Ctrl+Click the link. I get "Unable to open <url>. Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server.

2. Right click, copy the link.

3. Paste into a browser's URL field and press enter. The page loads normally.

What is Word doing???

The only odd thing about the URL is that it starts with an IP address rather than a domain name. Here and there on the Web I've found posts by other people who have encountered this problem with an IP address in a URL, but I haven't found any answers.

How did the link get the address in the first place? I do not know why it is what it is, but you could fix it by replacing the current address with an address WITH the domain name.

Uh... no. I can't do that, because it has no domain name.

The server is on a virtual machine on my company's network. It is (and is meant to be) accessible only inside the firewall.

Giving it a domain name (assuming I could, which I can't) would actually be confusing, by making it appear to be a "real" web site. That would get some people seriously bent out of shape, since the material I'm posting on it is proprietary!

Which returns us to the original question. Are there any Word mavens here who can help?

Within the Word context (the way Word works with hyperlinks and proxy servers), and the considerations you have described I do not think this may be possible. I am quite interested if someone can come up with something for this.

Macropod, are you serious? You consider posting a question in two different sites a breach of etiquette?

If you're looking for a used computer on Craigslist, do you also consider it a breach of etiquette to express interest to more than one seller at a time?

You definitely have too much time on your hands.
