Word 13 Quick access tool bar. Two line
How can Iget my 'Quick access tool bar' to 'word wrap' instead of terminating at the edge of the screen?

You can get a longer QAT by placing it under your Ribbon. You can save parts of a QAT in different templates so that they only show up when relevant or so you can load and unload parts quickly. Modifying the QAT and Ribbon in Microsoft Word |

Qat
Thank you for your reply. It's as I thought.
I've just migrated to Windows 8, (spelt hate with a silent 'h'), and word 13 from 2003. Personally I think ribbons suck, I believe thats what you say. I like my strips of icons + drop downs. They're fast, easy to use and don't take up 'half' the page. Ok you can hide the ribbons but then you need to do an additional move to view them again, and then its the wrong one. Also the ribbons seem to overdo the things you rarely use and don't seem to have so much information on the things you want. Well lets say I'm still looking. And agian why did MS have to posh up the ribbon names. What was wrong with the names (of drop downs) which we had before and were used to. Long live 2003. Oh and XP. |

Been there, done that. The ribbon is a major pain for power users of earlier versions. The ribbon interface is supposedly easier for new users. If you think this is bad, be glad you didn't start with Word 2007!
If you are up to it, you can create an emulation of floating (non-dockable) toolbars using modeless UserForms. That involves programming though, which toolbars in the menu versions of Word did not require. |

so how do we petition microsoft to enable 2-line quick access toolbar (QAT)?
1. I know how to program VBA macros, so I could do this for Word if I wanted to spend the time. However shouldn't they just give the option for multi-row toolbars? (Also, for OneNote, MS didn't even bother to build in the standard macro recorder and VBA editor, so we don't even have the option to create a custom menu. Lame!)
2. What happened to the old drag & drop method of editing the custom toolbars, like in Office 2003 & earlier? You could just click customize toolbar then click & drag a button to where you want it. And you had the option to break your toolbar up into multiple rows. Now we are forced to use this clunky editor with only 2 controls to move an item up and down a line - what if you want to move a button 20 items up to the top? All that clicking takes forever and after a while cramps up your hand! With the old drag & drop editor, you could instantly see what your toolbar looks like, if the icons will fit on one row, etc. So how / where do we petition Microsoft to fix this feature to work more like it did in the older pre-ribbon Office versions? |

You can petition all you want, but it won't happen. The limited ability to easily customize the UI's look was implemented at the request of corporate IT departments. The rest of us get to suffer. Google "user voice Word" for the place to petition.
It turns out that the ribbon interface does have some very nice customization available, just not through the user interface. Modifying the QAT in Microsoft Word Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) RibbonX: Customizing the Office Ribbon by Robert Martin, Ken Puls, and Teresa Hennig If you put a custom menu on a ribbon tab, it can be moved to the QAT even if the ribbon tab is not visible. You're kidding... so they dumbed it down for everyone just because corporate IT departments didn't want to have to deal with users having the options?
WHY NOT JUST HAVE AN ADMIN-LEVEL SETTING TO DISABLE THE FULL CUSTOMIZATION??? That way everybody wins, and it's not hurting the quality of the product. DUH. >The limited ability to easily customize the UI's look was implemented at the request of corporate IT departments. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 05-03-2017 at 06:32 PM. If you don't like Microsoft's design choices, you can vote with your software choices and use a different product.

RE: so how do we petition microsoft to enable 2-line quick access toolbar (QAT)?
I could, but I happen to *like* Microsoft's products, for the most part.
Hey, is that really the best answer you can come up with, love it or leave it? That's not an answer. Seriously, how can you expect a company to compete and make their products better without listening to their customers? I think it's a legitimate complaint - simply put, the quick access toolbar is now harder to use and lost some very helpful features, to satisfy a certain cross-section of users. I think my suggestion, to keep the full functionality, but add an admin-level option to limit it (for the corporate IT departments) is reasonable. >If you don't like Microsoft's design choices, you can vote with your software choices and use a different product. >>The limited ability to easily customize the UI's look was implemented at the request of corporate IT departments. It might be a good idea, but this is not the complaint window or the suggestion box. This is a forum for your fellow users to help you do what can be done in the current product. Nobody here works for Microsoft.
The thing is, someone at MS, a long time ago (more than ten years ago) decided that their bread and butter was not power users but corporate IT departments. The current ability to customize is far better than existed in Office 2007 although not necessarily as easy as Office 2003 (or 97). Even though I bought and installed Office 2007, I never used it. Office 2010 was enough of an improvement that it is now my production product. I have Office 2013 and 2016 but seldom use them. I don't need a 2-line QAT when I can create a Ribbon tab. If I wanted a floating toolbar of my own, I would at least look at the modeless userform. |

Thanks everyone for your replies nonetheless!
(Sometimes it's nice to just be able to vent frustrations, and hear some civil responses.) Much appreciated... |
