Default Numbering issue gap bettween 1.1 and text lower and higer numbering leave no gap

hey,

i have been having this problem in word, the numbering is fine through the document but when i press tab to change it to 17.1 it leaves a large gap between the text and the number. this consists for all .1 .2 .3 etc. when i press tab a second time the gap is gone and then 17.3.1 is displayed correctly but why is this gap only there for .1 and not for lower and higher levels of numbering. How do i remove the gap ?

so far i have tried the following:

resetting formating and renumbering (problem seams re-accruing )
right clicking the numbering and clicking decrease indent.
right click>adjust text indent>text indent at> change to a lower value.

help would be greatly appreciated.

An idea, yes … look at the tab settings. My guess, based on the screenshot, is that the tab between the second-level numbering and the text is not far enough to the right to hold so many characters: so, the first line of the text helpfully leaps in to the next default tab while the second/subsequent lines use the first.

Sorry this is only an idea and not a solution!

hey thanks for the reply. yea i think you might have been on the right track, i played around with the settings and managed to get it closer to what i required by adjusting the indent and playing around with the numbered indent property values

Thanks anyway
