Default Starting page numbering after initial pages

I am writing a book and would like to start page numbering after the title page and other introductory material. The Help information says to insert section breaks and number only the sections of interest, but that doesn't seem to work: when I try that all the prior pages are also numbered. Suggestions would be appreciated.

I use Word for Mac 2011, Version 14.3.9.

I think I've got it now. Thank you. The trick is the unlinking.

See the link given by Paul. For more on section breaks, headers and footers, and page numbering, see Sections / Headers and Footers in Microsoft Word 2007-2013. I do not know that this applies to Word 2011 but my guess is that it does. The document structure is the same, I believe.
