Default Table of Contents Shrinking Font to Fit Text on One Line - How to stop this?

I have a table of contents in a word document that is making the font sizes inconsistent because it is automatically resizing lines of text to fit them on one line. The style is set to be size 12 pt. The lines in the TOC appear to be bigger and smaller, but all read 12 pt when I check the size. Is there a way to tell word to stop resizing the table of contents font to make each item fit on one line?

Thank you!

It is not clear from your description exactly what's happening. I think we may need to know how you are creating your table of contents (TOC). In my experience, it is not the font size diminishing to fit the line, but perhaps this would happen in a content control of some kind, with which I have no experience.

Best,

I created the TOC by going to the reference tab, selecting Table of Contents, then "Insert Table of Contents". The .dot I am using already has styles defined that would show up in the TOC. But it appears to be random which lines of text are being shrinked in the TOC.

Could you explain what you mean by content control?

Hi Jgreer0315,

Word doesn't normally do this. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (TOC & Headings - delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.
