Question Editable text before numbered list

Hi,

I'm a teacher from the Netherlands and use MS Word for making my tests.
I've defined a style for test questions that includes a numbered list.
My problem is that I want to "prefix" the numbered list with the amount of points for each question. So it's not a fixed prefix, it needs to be editable. I know how to add a fixed prefix in a numbered list.

The way I've solved it so far is by creating a text box with a fixed position before the start of the line. I hope I express myself correctly and that you understand what I mean. In this text box I put the amount of point for the question.
So each time I create a new question I have to give the style I created and additionally insert the text box. But there must be an easier way!

How do I have to define my style so I get a piece of editable text before my numbered list?

Hope to get help on this soon.

Hi
my suggestion: you could use a 1 row, 2 columns table without borders for this purpose. You could fill in the points in cell one and start the numbered list ind cell two. If necessary, do some table formatiing and that's it.

Hope that works for you

Ah yes, I forgot to mention: no tables for formatting if possible. (At least not for the main structure of the document.)
I have used this technique before and it does achieve what I want so thank you for your suggestion.

But the thing is, for this to work I need to copy as many tables as I have questions in my test. That means either copy that many tables right from the start, but with work in progress it is hard to tell how many that will be, or copy the last one to get a new one and first remove it's content before I can start writing my new question.

That's why I would like to only use style definitions.
So does anyone know how to do it without the use of tables?

You could perhaps try creative use of tabs, indents and SEQ fields … so each block would consist of
  1. the manually-entered 'score', followed by a tab
  2. a SEQ field for reliable auto-numbering, followed by a tab
  3. the text of the question, with the style set so that the second and subsequent lines wrap neatly
Succes ermee!

Hi, I tried the SEQ field and it works, but...
I want to use styles only to format the test so I must be able to incorperate the SEQ in my style definition. And I don't know how to do that.

So, does anyone know how to define a style which consists of these three parts:
[text (score)] [tab] [SEQ field] [tab] [text (question)]
Each of these parts have to have their own style, so for example the score part must be of a smaller font size than the question part and the SEQ part must be bold.

If you know that what I want isn't possible that would be helpfull as well.

You cannot incorporate a SEQ field in a style definition. Sorry.

Instead of a text box, you could use a Frame, which can be a part of a Style definition. I'm not sure how this would work with Automatic numbering in the same Style.

I suspect you would want the Style with the frame to be followed by the numbering style, or vice versa.

You can create a Building Block that inserts the SEQ field and the tab characters that you want. The score on each paragraph would have to be added manually of course.
