Default Change default location for save does not work

I am using Word 2013 .I changed the default location of the save folder from the usual c drive to F drive. However it did not work for me . Each time I hit the save button Word does not automatically save to the F drive location I selected but opens the panel where I have to select the save location.

When I changed the Save folder location I left the other locations like auto save in their original locations. Can this be the problem?

What did I do wrong?

Tks

When you refer to "the panel where I have to select the save location," if you mean the Backstage area which covers up the entire document except for its Window Close button, then that is the way Word 2013 was designed to work when you hit the save button.

If, instead of using the save button, you use a keyboard shortcut (such as CTRL+S, F12, or any shortcut you create yourself) to save the document, then Word gives you the option of showing or hiding that Backstage area.

Drop down the File menu, select Options, and go to the Save tab. Check the box for "Don't show the Backstage when opening or saving files."

In case you haven't noticed yet, the "Default local file location" is only used when you first start a Word session, before the "current folder" has been established yet.

Maybe I got confused with the Win 2013 new GUI . I was not used to the backstage showing up. With the "Don't show the backstage when opening and saving files" checked, its much like the old win 2007 that I am used to. Thanks

What is the point of the setting a default location when the "Save to Local Computer " is checked? Word does not automatically save to this location when a new document is saved the first time anyway. My only conclusion is that by checking the "Save to local computer" Word does not make a copy of the document to Skydrive.

I'm not completely sure, but I think that if you fail to set a default location, Word will try to save your document in your "Documents" folder, because that is the only folder that it knows exists on all computers ... but since it probably isn't the place where you want your Word documents to be saved, you can give Word a better folder to use instead.

I believe that if I do not specify a default location to store the documents, Word will Save a document to c:\Users\username\documents and a copy in Skydrive. However the above wont happen if I specify "Local Computer" as default.

Even though I specify a local default drive and folder ex.:E:\My Documents. it wont save there automatically with a new document . It forces me to chose a Drive and folder. Thereafter it will always store the same document there ( after edit or view) . I guess that's how Word is supposed to work. Its just strange to me that Word allows one to specify a Default location and Folder for Save but does not do it automatically.
