I have a large document (146 pages) with chapter headings that look like this:



Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 2: Plan of the Book

etc.

Somehow (my aging memory has forgotten how), I set it up so that when I insert a cross-reference to a chapter number, it inserts, e.g., "Chapter 1:", or "Chapter 2:". That is, it keeps the word "Chapter" and the number of the chapter as I wish, but it also brings in the colon, which I do not want. I remember that I was able to set the thing up somehow in two parts so that the word "Chapter would be included, but I forgot what I did.

I'd be quite satisfied if such references returned only the number and I'd just type the word "Chapter" myself if that's easier.

If you are wanting to keep the word "Chapter" & numbering (just deleting the colon) you would want to modify the numbering style you are using (i.e., Heading 1) via the "Define New Number Format" dialog box. To get that (1) right-click on the Style in use to get the Modify Style dialog box; (2) Click on "Format" then "Numbering" to get the Numbering and Bullets dialog box; (3) click on "Define New Number Format" to get the dialog box; then (4) modify the "Number format:" to what you want.

You indicated that it now reads Chapter 1: etc. If that is true, that is what appears in the "Numbering format:" area. Simply change it to "Chapter 1" [without changing the default "1"] (or, however you want it to appear as). Click "OK" out of the menu's.

You can add the \t switch to a cross-reference (REF) field in order to suppress non-delimiter characters, such as "Chapter" in your example, but this doesn't work for the colon, unfortunately.

Instead you will have to edit the numbering scheme and remove the colon, as JimP suggested.

Thanks, that certainly improves matters. What I would really like, though, is for the colon to appear in the chapter titles themselves, just not in the references to them. This would be possible if I could place a colon immediately after the number in each chapter heading, although not in the definition of the heading itself. Currently, however, my Heading 1 has spaces after the number and I can't get the colon right next to it. I was unable to figure out a way to remove these spaces...

That is not what your original post indicated. However, assuming your "just not in reference to them" comment, I have to assume you are referring to the TOC. If that is the case, what you are asking for is not possible. When you set up your style the colon is either going to be part of the style...or, it is not. And, once you set your style, you cannot edit the heading line to include a colon elsewhere within that style.

Sorry I wasn't clear. No, I don't mean the table of contents, or at least not specifically that. I mean the headings as they appear in the document, which - yes - do appear as is in the table of contents.

I'm not talking about editing the style to include a heading somewhere within it, but simply having the comma appear in the appropriate place in the headings as they appear on the page. In other words, the colon would be part of the text of the heading - the part that the style gets attached to. This could be done if I could get rid of the spaces at the end of the style.

As it is now (thanks to your help), if I type the line that will become the heading as ": Introduction", what I'll get when I apply the style to it is "Chapter 1 : Introduction". If I could get rid of the automatic spaces after the style, then I would have "Chapter 1: Introduction", in which only the part appearing in bold face belongs to the style.

Are you now typing in the colon manually after the number? You can change the multilevel list so that it doesn't add any space after the paragraph/multilevel number. Click in the first Heading 1 paragraph of your list. Click Home tab | Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List. In the dialog box, click More to see all options. In the preview picture, click level 1. In the "Follow number with" drop down, choose "Nothing." Click OK.
